Future-oriented project in the Kulmbach district

FBS-Systems acquires project rights for the construction of a large-scale battery storage facility in Untersteinach. This will strengthen the local power grid and is an important part of the energy transition.

A key component of the energy transition is the temporal decoupling of the generation and use of green electricity. To this end, large-scale battery storage systems have been installed in the electricity grid for a few years now, which can store electricity in times of oversupply so that it can be fed back into the grid in times of demand.

Construction work on the plant, which has a connected load of 10 megawatts and a storage capacity of 20 megawatt hours, began in Untersteinach in the Kulmbach district in July. From next year, the storage facility will supply up to 20,000 households with electricity for up to two hours.

Thanks to their ability to both draw energy from and feed energy into the grid in a matter of seconds, these battery storage systems can be used to support the grid and have a stabilizing effect in the event of unforeseen fluctuations in the grid.

The performance class of the system is roughly equivalent to an open-space solar system with a size of ten hectares or three medium-sized wind turbines. “These battery storage systems give us the opportunity to take a big step towards an upgraded power grid of the future without taking up a lot of space or sealing off land,” says Fabian Fink, Operations Manager at FBS-Systems.

FBS-Systems has been developing project rights for grid-connected battery storage systems for over two years and has already implemented several systems. The now 10-strong team from Augsburg is one of the pioneers of the battery storage sector in Germany.
